Romania Holidays 2023 – What are the prices?

When you are planning your vacation, one of the most important things to consider is the price. Our catalog includes several itineraries ranging from 1 or 2-days short breaks to the 11-days study trips. Each tour has a different price depending on inclusions and accommodation type (some of tours allow you to choose higher-quality accommodation for an extra cost).

There are two major trip types in our catalog: the regular itineraries, which usually reunite larger groups of people and depart on set dates and our private tours. The main advantage of a tailor made experience is the ability to depart on a date which suits you best and travel with your friends and family only. This exclusivity means that private tours cost a little more than regular editions, but if you are looking for a more intimate experience, it’s completely worth it.

On average, you will spend about €1200 on a 7-days tour (with double occupancy, if you require a Single room, you will have to pay the ‘Single Supplement’ cost). Our 3-days itineraries cost around €650 per person.

What is the price of food in Romania?

Our Dracula and Halloween tours provide you with one or two meals per day: a breakfast and a dinner (the exact inclusions are specified for each tour). Still, you may find yourself enjoying lunch on your own account. In this situation, you should know that the average cost of food in our country is 104 lei / day according to Budget Your Trip. The same website claims that travelers spend an average of 31 lei / day on alcoholic drinks.

While meal prices in Romania can vary, the average cost of food in Romania is lei104 per day. Based on the spending habits of previous travelers, when dining out an average meal in Romania should cost around lei41 per person. Breakfast prices are usually a little cheaper than lunch or dinner. The price of food in sit-down restaurants in Romania is often higher than fast food prices or street food prices.

Budget Your Trip

How much does transportation cost in Romania?

Budget Your Trip reveals that travelers spend an average of 79 lei/person on local transportation. Needless to say, if you book a tour which includes transfer, you won’t have to worry about this since we provide a bus or a car depending on the number of travelers in the group.

If, however, you find yourself in need of using local transportation means, take into account that public transport (bus or subway) is cheaper than a taxi ride. However, there are a couple of disadvantages. First of all, buses and trains are usually very crowded especially around rush hours. In addition, you may encounter petty thieves on public transportation. They operate by cutting your bag and stealing your wallet without you noticing. You can avoid something like this happening to you by keeping your bag or purse within eyesight the entire time.

Taxis are more expensive, but they are also a more private way to move around. Still, you should be aware of drivers who are trying to scam you by circling around in order to inflate the sum on the meter. They might also try to negotiate with you and propose to keep the meter off and pay them a pre-established sum. Although they will not circle you around if you accept, you should know that this practice is illegal and that you might still pay a lot more than the ride is actually worth. We recommend using ride sharing apps like Uber or Taxify, which are available in all the big cities.

Is it safe to visit Romania?

Romania is considered a safe country for tourists. On the Global Terrorist Database, our country ranks 138/163, meaning that no terrorist attacks have occured here. Another statistic, this time the Global Peace Index, which analyzes militarization, society and security ranks Romania on position 22/163, making it one of the safest countries in Central and Eastern Europe.

While the crime rate is low in Romania – below the European average – corruption is still very high. If you find yourself in a situation where authorities propose a ‘mutually beneficial’ solution which stretches the boundaries of the law or is blatantly outside the law, you should refuse the agreement and insist on legal justification.

Need to Know before your holidays to Transylvania

  • Confirm your passport is valid for 6 months from when you think your trip will end. Don’t get stranded.
  • Get comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your gear. Get insurance that’s right for you and covers your activities in the places you’ll go. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.
  • Consider your physical and mental health. Get advice from your doctor if you’re unsure.
  • See your doctor or travel clinic 8 weeks before you go for a basic health check
  • Check if your medication is legal and available in the places you’re going. Take enough of your prescribed medicines to last the whole trip. Carry copies of your prescription and a letter from your doctor.
  • Tell your bank you’re travelling and check if your cards will work. Have several payment options.

Driving in Romania

Our escorted tours usually offer transfer between your destinations either via bus or via minibus or car, depending on the size of the group. If you intend to extend your stay or explore a city on your own terms outside our itinerary, you might find yourself having to drive.

While inside a city, you can use a bus or a taxi to move around, but we recommend getting a rental car if you have multiple destinations. This saves you the time you would otherwise have to spend waiting for a bus or a taxi and it helps you avoid the usual problems with public transportation: pickpockets and shady taxi drivers.

Inside cities, traffic is usually very crowded, even more so around rush hours. Furthermore, you may encounter drivers who blatantly disregard the law. You should pay attention to your surroundings and do not respond if an aggresive driver provokes you for any reason. Always plan ahead if you want to stop inside the city because free parking spots are hard to find.

Outside cities, National Roads pass through several villages where you may encounter carts and animals on the road. Currently, there are few highways in Romania, so the roads are more crowded than they should be.

Pickpocketing

In Romania, you can walk safely through cities, not worrying that you might be mugged – there are a few cases, but very rare. However, you might encounter petty thieves. They usually grab your purse and make a run for it. More advanced thieves prefer the silent approach – they cut your purse open while you are in a crowded bus or train and sneak away with your belongings before you even notice what happened.

A few tips you should follow in order to make sure your valuables are not stolen:

  • Leave your valuable belongings in the hotel safe whenever possible
  • If you need to carry your belongings around, keep your bag/purse in front of you, within eyesight – this usually discourages thieves
  • Do not exchange money on the street – avoid individuals who offer such services because they are most likely scammers; instead look for a bank or, even better, an exchange house

According to Romanian laws:

  • Always carry photo ID – you should keep the original passport or ID card somewhere safe and carry photocopies with you
  • You are prohibited from taking photos of airports, military sites or other secure locations (this includes drones – be careful, as you might have a non-pleasant surprise if you accidentally fly a drone in military airspace)
  • Penalties for drug offences are severe. Depending on the seriousness of the crime, you can face up to 20 years in jail. Authorities are focusing more on finding the dealers rather than the users, but it’s always best to avoid getting in trouble

Travel Insurance

Getting a travel insurance is the best way to protect yourself in case unwanted situations occur. Having an insurance prevents you and your family from suffering financially if anything doesn’t go as planned.

For instance, you should know that healthcare in a foreign country can be very expensive. You will not receive free care or subsidized costs either. This is where a travel insurance comes in handy. If you choose a good insurance, you can count on your insurer to cover the costs.
